‘Old’ Shouldn’t Mean ‘Stupid’…

…so why all this fuss?

A group of OAPs were left with a nasty taste in their mouths after mistaking packs of soil for cookies.

It seems they were part of a Lurpak giveaway to grow dill. Shouldn’t have caused a problem, right? Assuming you read the packet?

Three elderly people in the space of two hours alerted the manager of Lawrence Court residential care homes in Southill Garden Drive, Weymouth to the ‘misleading’ Lurpak giveaway.

In what way was it ‘misleading’? Were they marked ‘cookies’? No?

Didn’t think so, somehow.

John and Jean Hobbs’ delight at finding what they thought were free biscuits with their butter turned to disgust when mud filled their mouths and they realised it was a lump of soil and dill seeds.

Pensioner John, 79, said: “It was just as though I’d got a mouthful of grit, it was terrible.“It was especially confusing because it was attached to food.”

And if something’s ‘attached to food’, you just stick it in your mouth, right? No wonder they say old age is a second childhood…

Residential care home manager Sharon Grange is warning people to be aware of the possible danger. She said: “I went to visit John and Jean Hobbs and they told me they’d just bought a pack of Lurpak that had biscuits with it.

“Both of them almost choked to death because it was actually soil.

“I said ‘you need to get on to Lurpak and tell them’ because it really looked like cookies. ”

Oh, for the love of…

“An hour later my mother-in-law came up to see us and said to me ‘look at this butter I bought today, I ate these biscuits and they taste awful’.“I said ‘oh my goodness, they’re not biscuits’.

You wouldn’t think to read the pack because it looks so much like cookies. It’s really dangerous – how many other people have done this if that’s three people in a couple of hours?

Why have they made them to look like cookies?”

Well, they haven’t, it’s just that those little circles of pressed soil with seeds in look a bit like cookies. How are they supposed to get round that? Dye them green?

Of course, most people are careful and read what’s on the packet before they attempt to put them in their mouth…

No one from Lurpak was available for comment.

Laughing too hard? Or wondering how much compo they are going to be stung for?

OMG! They thought it was food? Just as well I’m not drinking anything while at the keyboard…

I don’t think age is a major component in this day and age. There are five year olds with more common sense than many adults. Until they meet our education system anyway.

I wonder did the two old folk actually nearly choke to death or did they just cough and splutter a bit?

I’m guessing the latter. But ‘nearly choked to death’ ups the compo a bit, doesn’t it?
