National Lottery Fund, £500,000:
A domestic violence charity which helps safeguard the lives of more than 500 battered women and children each year, has been saved from closure with a grant from the Big Lottery Fund.
Ah, a nicely PC little cause. Still, if it’s successful, then who am I to carp?
It is successful, right?
Project Manager Debra Molyneaux said: “For the past 22 months, the centre has had major funding problemsand has just been hanging on by a thread.“Without this grant, the centre would of (sic) closed without a doubt.
“Domestic violence is clearly an issue in Rossendale and figures show it is increasing year upon year.”
Hmmm….
East Lancashire Hospice has thanked fundraisers for helping the Raise the Roof appeal hit the £100,000 mark.
The Lancashire Telegraph campaign aims to raise £125,000 to build a new roof over the hospice’s inpatients unit.
Yes, admittedly, the commenters have a point when they say why the hell do charities have to fund this when we pay so damn much for our ‘world class’ NHS, but still…
Fundraiser Kimberley Hall said: “We would love to hit the overall target before Christmas, but cannot get there without more of the fantastic generositywe’ve already seen.“To reach £125,000 would be the best Christmas present ever for the hospice. It would be a dream come true.”
I know who I’d rather spend my money on…

“I know who I’d rather spend my money on”
So do I – and their money seems to go further.
Indeed!
How odd! The local crime stats released by the police say that violent crime in the area is actually going down. Last year there were around 1,000 assaults in total (out of 65,000 people in the area). So half of them resulted from domestic violence? Who’d have thunk it, considering that in most other areas of the UK the majority of violence is on the streets, particularly at the weekend.
The police must be mistaken with their figures – I mean how would they know?
