Bloggers – how much BS do you write?

Readers at OoL and to a lesser extent at N.O have been known to accuse me of long-winded posts – bla-bla-thons in fact, which go on forever, never get to the point and indeed, sometimes lose the plot altogether. I’ve always wondered just how right they were.

Chuckles has kindly sent the New Science on the matter – the Bla-Bla-Meter. Simply select text from your blog, feed it in and press the button. Soon it gives you a printout as to just how much bullshit you actually write.

Thrilled but fearful, I selected the text below at random from one of today’s posts:

This was brought on by this David Stockman pontificating on the economy and the unfortunate thing is that he’s right to a great extent, even if his manner gets up the nose. There certainly is a greater wisdom, in a home truths homily way, that the years bring, a more calm demeanour in the average male as he slows but there is also an impatience, a curmudgeonliness, a rigidity, both physically and mentally and then the health issues begin. They can be held off for a long time but they do eventually begin.

That makes a man more curmudgeonly and I’m thinking of me da here. My stepfather never really became curmudgeonly but equally, he had trouble suffering fools or people who didn’t act with decency.

… entered it, pressed the button and out came:

Some people I sent this result to took issue with it, feeling my BS level must be far higher. Well, we need to administer a fair test, do we not [oops, this post is now becoming unacceptably long], so I took an excerpt from the OoL post on snitching:

You can just imagine what that does to a society, to it’s character, to its cohesion and it is only possible where the elite ensconces itself and encourages the people to turn on each other. This is why people were still loathe to talk years later, why eyes were avoided, why no one smiled up front. I heard many tales, mainly from the late middle-aged, about the Black Mariahs which came at midnight and they were no film producer’s fiction. I’ve walked on the ex-lake which everyone knew the bodies were beneath.

… entered it, pressed the button and out came:

Try it if you have a blog and see how you do.

I tried it on part of a Vince Cable speech and got 0.35.

    Bullshit Index :0.35
Your text shows indications of ‘bullshit’-English. It’s still ok for PR or advertising purposes, but more critical audiences may be skeptical.

Rumsfeld’s known known came about about 0.20 and one of Sir Humphrey Appleby’s 0.29. I put in some genuine corporate speak and it scored 0.48.
