Charlie Hebdo will publish on Wednesday cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad. Cartoons that should not fail to create a new controversy and inflame tensions in the Muslim world.
Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs, when he was interviewed in Cairo about the possibility of cartoons depicting Mohammed, said he was “against any provocation,” while recalling the existence in France of the freedom of expression .
For his part, Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault disapproves “excess” and calls everyone to “responsibility”. Recalling that “freedom of expression constitutes one of the fundamental principles of our Republic.”
Rector of the Great Mosque of Paris, Boubakeur launched a “call for calm” Tuesday night. “I call not to pour oil on the fire,” he said.
That’s just rich – to speak of excess and responsibility and then to speak of freedom of expression. Charlie Hebdo is exercising the latter. To my knowledge, they haven’t broken copyright or slandered or libelled anyone personally, they haven’t taken long-range shots of mammary glands – they’ve drawn cartoons. A similar thing in rubber would be Spitting Image.
What we have here is one group of people – us – going about our business attacking each other, taking the amber liquid and in waltz these savages reasserting fatwah on Salman Rushdie and getting their knickers in a twist. They are encouraging murder and violence and in my book, that is a hate crime. Now, if they’re anywhere in the EU, they therefore need to be arrested this evening, do they not and charged?
There’s a bit of a disproportionate difference between a cartoon and an exhortation to murder. And it’s all very well these bozos above saying: “Keep calm, don’t pour oil …” when the uncalm ones are the savages who will not dictate to us and we will not be cowed by them.
Thus, many from this part of the world are going to do the exact opposite – poking fun at Islam, just as the Musselmen do in their cartoons about the west. People would never have thought of doing it before these murderous thugs did as they’ve done. Now the thing is going to escalate. Not urging this in the least because it’s about freedom, including the freedom to decide.
I’m just predicting it will escalate, that there are some seriously peeved people about.
