…not if the usual public sector method of dealing with such things is followed:
Kingston Council’s former director of children’s services, who resigned days before a damning child protection report was made public, was given a year’s salary as a payoff, the Surrey Comet has learned.Duncan Clark was paid £128,000 after his resignation in July, despite Kingston Council leader Councillor Derek Osbourne’s claim the “final responsibility” for the failures lay with Mr Clark.
Who’s surprised?
Kingston Council chief executive Bruce McDonald declined questions about why he rubber-stamped the pay-off.
Pity we can’t afford to get shot of him too!

Perhaps Bruce is hoping for the same courtesy when his time comes.
He’ll almost certainly get it..
Ever since the Shoesmith debacle it has become apparent that you can’t be sacked merely for being rubbish at the job. It’s a pain but:
“In a case like this the alternative to a compromise agreement would be a contested departure under formal capability procedures would have taken a year or more. In addition there would have been the costs of dealing with the investigation, hearings and possibly a tribunal.”
Grrr. The payoff is the rational and pragmatic way to go.
And if nothing changes, we’ll always be on the hook for this, and there’ll never be any incentive to hire the competent…
As long as …..
They don’t then go & get another job somewhere les & screw that up as well.
The real problem with the NHS/N-Staffs scandal is that the guilty (& I MEAN GUILTY! ) people are still in charge.
Now what?
It’s all part of what has recently been called:
The Beige Dictatorship

They aren’t “rewarded for failure” they’re paid to keep their gobs shut. They know where the rest of the bodies are buried and precisely who put them there.
Payoffs go hand-in-hand with Gagging Orders.
Tatty has it. These scum are given the huge payoffs on the conditions that they won’t go to the press and they won’t subsequently raise court or tribunal cases. It’s hush money pure and simple, and we’re paying it.
There are no words to describe this behaviour in cases where people have died.
There are words. It’s just that they’d melt the profanity filter!
