Classic. Carlin says, understandably, if you want kidz to grow up normal, leave them TF alone – he got a big cheer for that and on a scale, on a continuum from leaving them alone to mummying and nannying them to death, I’d lean towards the former.
Thinking back to childhood, my parents turn out now, it seems, to have been inspired. They were as strict as hell about manners and close your mouth and pull in your stomach and don’t slouch, they controlled what I couldn’t wear – James Dean outfits etc. but when it came to using my time, they backed off and it’s only now I realize how much they did that, how much space I really had.
My memories of those days are of getting on the bike and that’s the last they saw of me for the day. It’s only now I wonder what they got up to themselves while I was away? Perhaps it wasn’t so much the good parenting after all, LOL.
Trouble today is you can’t just let them run free like that – the vipers are in wait with the world culture at five -getting them to decide if they’re gay or not and having their first shoot up. Nor should we, under any circumstances, go the matriarchal way in the other direction – those parents are destructive to the kid’s resilience and ability to think on his feet.
Can’t there be something in the middle?
