A number of people around the internet have been following the Mainstream Last First Expedition where four chaps have decided to row through the Northwest Passage.
VANCOUVER, CANADA AND DUBLIN, IRELAND, June 18, 2013.
On July 1, 2013 four modern-day explorers from Vancouver will attempt a world first by rowing the 3,000 km Northwest Passage in a specially commissioned boat by human power alone in a single season, a feat only possible now due to the melting ice in the Arctic. Global wind and solar company Mainstream Renewable Power is sponsoring the expedition to bring awareness to the profound effects climate change is having on the environment.
Stirring stuff and I am not questioning the courage of these guys, but according to NASA the Arctic is not likely to repeat last year’s record melt which could turn out to be a trifle inconvenient. In fact the Arctic summer is over early and the rowers are unlikely to reach their goal, although at the moment their blog says nothing about giving up. Maybe they should.
So I hope they come out of this stunt intact having learned something about uncertainty and maybe an additional something about charlatans who claim to know what they manifestly do not know.
Their Energy Climate Petition had 204 signatures the last time I looked.
A foolish stunt. Wasted courage.
