Democrat Bill de Blasio is New York City’s mayor-elect.
Most of us haven’t a clue who he is. However, our friends on the Left do. Plaudits for the man are floating around British media and Labourite circles.
de Blasio’s Wikipedia entry says that he was a staunch supporter of the Sandinistas and, as a city councillor, influenced the passage of the Benefits Translation for Immigrants Law, which gives new arrivals translation services at no extra charge when applying for welfare.
Steerpike, The Spectator‘s gossip columnist, for lack of a better term, reports (emphases mine):
Team Ed credit [de Blasio] with a ‘different kind’ of politics.
Ed’s greybeard Lord Wood has penned a gushing paean to de Blasio in today’s Telegraph. Wood applauds de Blasio’s ‘Disraelian theme: “One New York, Rising Together”’ … the word ‘one’ seems to have assumed mythic proportions in the minds of Ed’s counsellors. Then again, it’s Lord Wood’s business to talk nonsense and he’s very good at it.
His lordship has also flagged up one newspaper editorial: ‘the Daily News said in its endorsement of his candidacy, “De Blasio will arrive in City Hall with a mandate to ease the punishing cost of living”’.
That last sentence refers to increased taxes on high earners. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds. Said high earners, a number of whom work on Wall Street, will no doubt be packing up to move to Connecticut or hightailing it to London.
No doubt, rEd will see how many pages he can borrow from de Blasio’s notebook.
