Stop Right There!

Figures obtained by the Guardian from the Link network, the body responsible for running Britain’s ATMs, show there are 269 low-income areas lacking a free machine within a 1km radius.

These “cash machine deserts”

Oh, for…!!

What, wasn’t the concept of a ‘food desert’ ridiculous enough?

And if it’s such  problem, well, don’t worry, traditional Labour heartland councils have the answer - reduce the need for cash!

Dean Langton, Pendle Council’s chief finance officer, said in a report to councillors: “The expectation is that residents will switch to another payment channel.”

You mean there are places in the UK where you can get free money from ATMs, or am I missing something?

Ivan, I suspect the term “a free machine” means one that does not charge a fee for using it.

What has been going on in the UK since I left a rather large number of years ago? You mean that they actually charge you to withdraw your money? Utter madness!

The US has been doing this for at least a decade.

That doesn’t make it right, I’m just saying the UK is not operating without precedent.

 Actually, I live more than 1 klom from the nearest cash machine, but it is hardly a desert being 15 minutes to the town centre on foot, on a main road etc. There are many other places more sparsely populated which do have longer distances. One reason in the areas referred to might be all those ATM’s having been ripped out by large machines by the people from the local social housing.

Try travelling down the social scale a little read the stats, people in social housing cannot afford a digging machine unless you meant sowing machines, the clue is in the word travelling?.
