Sing Those Prison Blues, Billy!

The banning of steel-string guitars in British prisons has come under fire from a group of prominent musicians..

Including everyone’s favourite:

… including Billy Bragg, Johnny Marr, Dave Gilmour and Richard Hawley.

Dave Gilmour I’d heard of, the others..?

Other musicians that have signed the letter include Seasick Steve, Speech Debelle, and Scroobius Pip.

*blank look*

The ban came in as part of the government’s changes to the incentive and earned privileges policy for prisoners in November last year, the same initiatives that banned prisoners from receiving books.

Nylon stringed guitars are still allowed for those who earn the privilege.

I’d suggest they replace them with harmonicas for that traditional jailhouse feel, but I suppose they’d make a bit of a bruise if thrown…

Billy, however, is heedless of the safety argument:

” There’s never been to my knowledge, an incident in a British prison where someone has been attacked with a steel string guitar. It makes no sense – where’s the logic behind this? Where’s the thinking behind this?

Well, if it saves one life, Billy…

…How about because you can’t hang yourself with nylon wire?

See, now here’s a ban that actually makes some sense – banning books I just don’t get but guitars are obvious as each one has a set of garotting tools attached.

Scroobius Pip 😕 WTAF? If that had been mentioned to me without the above context I’d have naturally assumed it was some sort of Venereal disease 😉

Billy should not be so generous for when it comes to the usage of steel wire he must be on the list somewhere for total twattery.

Seasick Steve did a song called “I started out with nothing and I’ve still got most of it left”

You can garotte with nylon as well, the plain G string is good.
