I must be coming down with a temperature!
The Green Party’s Pete West, who was last night sworn in as the new mayor of Brighton and Hove, said he will not fundraise for three charities during his year as is tradition.
He has instead picked 27 organisations, including four national organisations, who will have permission to use the mayor’s crest.
So the pot will be split between more organisations. Who could object?
Well… the vested interests used to having it all their own way, of course!
The decision has been questioned by charity bosses and officials, including the outgoing mayor Lynda Hyde, with fears the new approach will not generate as much money for good causes. Terry Ayres, from The Sussex Heart Charity, which is among the 27, said: “There is a kudos to being one of the mayor’s charities and it waters it down if there’s 27 of them.
“It’s more important to us to raise money for heart patients and I’m not convinced this approach will help us do that.”
How very selfish, and, dare I say it, uncharitable!
